Good evening Westlake residents,
We wanted to give you an update on the winter weather that is approaching Westlake and the entire DFW region. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all of North Texas. Heavy snow, ice, sleet, blowing snow or a combination of these is possible for our area.
Tonight we can expect a wintry mix, with a light amount of snow and ice. Tomorrow morning, we should see a mix of both with snow beginning to accumulate as the day moves forward.
Here's a snapshot of what our Town staff is doing to keep you safe on the roads.
- Staff will be monitoring the streets and facilities around the clock over the next few days
- Our trucks are loaded with sand and are ready to roll
- We have access to TxDOT sand and salt if extra is required
- We also have access to additional equipment as well
- Town staff is working closely with both our Westlake Fire-EMS team and Keller Police to look for trouble spots along our streets
- We will provide daily updates in the morning and night via email, our website, and social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter
- Additional updates throughout the day will be given if needed
While we highly discourage driving in these conditions, if you have to do so, we've provided a list of helpful hints for you to navigate the snowy/icy roads.
- Use the Three-Second Rule to control your speed year-round, but don't forget to add a second of following distance for each hazardous condition you face on the road (low light, rain, and ice are perfect examples). Find a safe place to pull over when conditions warrant.
- Car batteries may only have half the cranking power in freezing temperatures, and even the best windshield wiper blades may only last six months. Add these action items to your typical auto maintenance checklist, along with a tire tread and winter-ready fluid check.
- Even at temperatures above freezing, black ice can be present almost anywhere. While it may look to the naked eye like a typical wet spot on the road, it's a winter driving hazard that puts many Texans in the ditch.
If you are in an accident or get stuck in the snow or ice, please call 9-1-1 immediately. Our Westlake Fire-EMS team as well as Keller Police will respond as quickly as they can.
